Overview

The play is set in 1901 in the garden of Chekhov's house in Yalta. Olga Knipper, actress and close friend, is visiting and is peeved that he has not proposed. She tries to stage manage a declaration but Chekhov takes refuge in their memories and they relive moments from their theatrical careers. Inescapably, Chekhov is drawn into making a firm commitment to her and the play ends on an echo of his drama, The Proposal.
