Overview

Over a decade ago, Baker's Plays commissioned New York's Circle Rep playwright Peter Dee to create a dramatic work responsive to the contemporary journey of young adults. Since then, we've sold over a thousand productions of this powerful drama, and it has become one of the most influential plays for secondary schools. Now we offer Mr. Dee's latest, a passionate, creative, deeply moving theatrical montage for young adults who are moving cautiously toward the end of the 20th century. The scenes, two-and three-character plus monologues, can be easily rehearsed with a flexible schedule, allowing ample opportunity for the director to do important individual work with the actors. These riveting scenes vary in intensity from the comic -- a perfectly charming young woman who is a major klutz -- to serious -- a young teen mourns the shooting death of his brother; from whimsical -- a young woman reflects on her wonderful (but strange) parents -- to devastating -- Jacinda tells of faith and injustice during the Los Angeles riots. These deeply moving and often funny "voices" are woven with brilliance; they culminate in an overwhelmingly powerful collection of truths. The dialogue is honest and the issues are contemporary. Includes two optional songs.

Voices 2000 is today's young adult plea for understanding, a theatrical work of stunning importance.

Mr. Dee is the recipient of the International Director's Award given by the Educational Theatre Association (the Thespian Society).
