An unnamed couple, Man and Woman, are relaxing in their chic city apartment after a late party, when the Woman comes across a startling statistic: "every twenty minutes somebody in America kills himself." The Man is unimpressed, reflecting that he and his wife belong to "the generation of fish: We sink or swim and nobody gives a damn which." The Woman, however, fights her husband's glib resignation and searches instead for some remaining glimmer of life.
